Kanaka Durga Devasthanam, Vijayawada

Situated on the Indrakeeladri Hill, with a view over the energetic city of Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, India, the Kanakadurga Temple is an exemplar of both architectural magnificence and spiritual importance. The history of the Kanakadurga Temple dates back thousands of years, yet scholars cannot agree on the precise year of its founding. 

According to legend, the goddess manifested on this very hill to protect the land from evil forces, making it a sacred site of divine intervention and protection. Kanakadurga, a form of Goddess Durga, is depicted as a powerful and benevolent deity. The name "Kanakadurga" translates to "Golden Durga," symbolizing purity, prosperity, and strength. 

According to mythology, goddess Durga killed demon Mahishasura and enshrined on the Keela Mountain with eight arms in the form of Mahishasura Mardini as she had given boon to Keela. Indra and all other gods worshipped the goddess Kanaka Durga on the hill which later known as Indrakeeladri. In Dwaapara Yuga, Arjuna did great penance on Indrakeeladri for Lord Shiva in order to get the most powerful Astra called Paashupataastra. Later, Lord Shiva appeared to fulfill the desire of Arjuna and called him as Vijaya (victorious). The place came to be known as Vijayawada after Arjuna's victory.

The deity in the temple is regarded as Swayambhu (self-manifested) and considered very powerful. Though exact origins of the temple are unknown, inscriptions of different dynasties are found in the temple. It is said that Sri Adi Sankara visited this temple and installed the Sri Chakra here.

It is said that Goddess Durga seems to give darshan as a very terrific idol and the ruthviks there used to cover it with turmeric and vermilion, when Jagath-Guru Adi Sankara have visited then with his divine power he had took the "kala(s)" and have stored them on another hill which is located near Moghalrajpuram.
